With empty shelves and financial resources strained more than ever, our CARES food pantry and emergency assistance center is deluged with clients seeking help. We are so grateful to the volunteers and donors who keep our doors open to serve those who otherwise would face hunger, utility cut-off, eviction, or who would not be able to afford important medications. The crisis in our country, our economy is mirrored by the multitudes that must turn to GEDCO for basic necessities.

One vibrant, warm-hearted volunteer who is helping us serve a nearly 37% increase in clients this year is Marion Washington. Marion certainly has the experience to compassionately assist those who come to CARES for food and finances. In 2004, Marion was laid off from Morgan State University after 17 years of work, which began a series of unfortunate events in her life. Marion now speaks about her difficult path thoughtfully, noting her constant hope and enthusiasm, but it surely was a challenge to be forced to sell her home and car and to be without a job. As she regained her footing, Marion joined the National Council of Negro Women and sought out a place to stay in a shelter. She pinpoints these tandem events as her chance to stay strong at a very low moment.

Although the shelter shut down shortly after she moved there, Marion was able to secure a room at Micah House, GEDCO’s housing and supportive services program for individuals who are homeless. Soon thereafter, Marion learned that her own mother was going to CARES for help. Worried about her mom’s well being as she struggled with her own, Marion faced the challenges head on. After only three months at Micah House, Marion was able to get an apartment last fall. Overall, Marion’s tenacity has served her well, as she has 13 years of sobriety and is working on a Master’s degree at Morgan State University.

Marion now is one of the most faithful volunteers at CARES. She describes the difficult portions of her path as her blessing and considers GEDCO her greatest ally. Marion portrays her work at CARES as an opportunity to use her skills and experience to “give back,” and she proudly describes GEDCO as a community where people care.

In an article in a May issue of the Baltimore Examiner Marion is quoted as saying, “We inspire one another if we tell our stories.” Marion is an inspiring woman, and her volunteer service is making the paths of others a little bit easier.
